Unlike secular counseling, Christian counseling presents Jesus Christ as the ultimate solution to all of life's difficulties. Therefore Christian therapy is not based on man-made theories of human personality but on God's revealed truth as set forth in His Word: "All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable, for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work." (2 Tim. 3:16, 17)
Lasting behavioral Change occurs when the counselee responds to the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, who leads him into the truth (John 16:13). The end result is the abundant life in Christ (John 7:38, 10:10) characterized by the supernatural fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
In contrast to current secular views, the counseling focuses on the whole man - spirit, soul and body (I Thes. 5:23). While all three aspects of the individual are carefully considered in the counseling process, it is the spirit, the inner man, which receives major emphasis.
